Definition: Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis : the process by which plants manufacture carbohydrates from raw materials using energy from light
Photosynthesis Word Equation
carbon dioxide + water ? glucose + oxygen, in the presence of light and chlorophyll
[Supplement] Balanced Equation
[Supplement] Light to chemical energy
Chlorophyll transfers light energy into chemical energy in molecules, for the synthesis of carbohydrates
[Supplement] Storage of glucose
The glucose produced in photosynthesis may be used in various ways by plants and algae.
Glucose is needed by cells for respiration. However, it is not produced at night when it is too dark for photosynthesis to happen. Plants and algae store glucose as insoluble products. These include starch and oils.
[Supplement] Use of glucose
Some glucose is used to produce:
Cellulose - which strengthens the cell wall
Proteins - such as enzymes and chlorophyll
Plants also need nitrates to make proteins. These are absorbed from the soil as nitrate ions.
Some glucose is used for respiration to release energy.
